Wasaga Stars Atom #2 vs Penetang Flames #1
The Atom #2 team hit the road for the first time of the season and went head to head with a very good Penetang Flames #1 team in what looked like a match up of two teams that have the potential to be the leaders in the local loop.  Both teams came into the game with no losses on the board and only one could come away with a perfect record.

Coach Mike had a strong message in the locker room before the game and encouraged players to play a team game knowing that the Stars would be in tough against the Flames.  Through most of the 1st period the teams went back and forth with the goalies stealing the show.  Near the end of the 1st period the Stars were able to strike first with a drive down the wing by Ben P. and a shot through the five hole to open the scoring.  The second time in two games Ben P. opened the scoring for the Stars.

In the 2nd period the Stars goalie Gavin S. was up to the challenge and turned away multiple scoring chances but the Flames goalie matched wits and after the 2nd period the Stars still lead the way by a score of 1-0.

Going into the 3rd period the Stars team knew they were going to have to clamp down and play some very strong defense.  The new addition to the team, Maddux D. provided stability on the back end and working with Chyna S., Jack B. (playing his first game on defense) and Andrew D. the defensive lines held strong.  The Flames were able to tie the game a few minutes into the 3rd but the Stars, Evan H. notched his first goal of the season with Matthew M. notching his first ever assist on the goal.  After the lines changed up, the Stars showed a little lack of concentration and let the Flames tie the score again and it looked like the game was headed for a tie.  The Flames though made a late mistake and took the first penalty of the game with just over a minute left.  The Stars pushed hard to score the game winning goal and with just 7 seconds left in the game Maddux D took a pass from Matthew M and skated into the zone around the Flames defender and zipped a wrist shot by the Flames goalie to put the Stars ahead for good.

As for player of the game it was an obvious choice.  With multiple big saves and a very composed effort, Gavin S. was awarded player of the game.
